clerk.com homepage teardown: 71/100

Sleek, product-led developer design that severely undermines its own conversion by omitting a primary CTA button in the hero body.

We ran clerk.com through PageCritic's landing page audit. It scored 71/100, #5 of the 9 developer tool landing page examples we scored (average 70) and #29 of all 70 homepages in our ranked list. Its strongest area is Design (88), and its weakest is CTA (54).

Audited on 2026-10-18 from desktop and mobile screenshots plus the page's HTML. The scores are an AI's opinion of conversion best practices, not measured conversion rates, and clerk.com didn't ask for this review. The page may have changed since.

Top 3 issues, with fixes

1. No primary CTA button in the hero body

Between the subheadline 'More than APIs. The complete user layer for modern apps.' and the interactive component tab bar, there is no direct action button like 'Start building free'. The user has to hunt for the tiny 'Sign up' link in the top nav.

Fix: Add a high-contrast primary CTA button (e.g., 'Start free' or 'Get started in 5 minutes') directly beneath the subheadline, paired with a secondary 'View documentation' link.

2. Mobile view truncates interactive tabs and agent prompt

On mobile screens, the tab button truncates to 'Enterprise Authenticati...' with an ellipsis, and the prompt snippet cuts off at 'clerk.com/S'. This harms readability and developer polish.

Fix: Switch the 4-tab switcher to a horizontally scrollable pill container on mobile and adjust font sizing/padding on the prompt input so full strings remain visible.

3. Embedded demo components inject conflicting H1 headings

The page has 5 separate <h1> tags because embedded UI mockups use <h1> for 'Create your account', 'Sign in to your account', and 'Join the waitlist', diluting the primary page topic for search engines.

Fix: Demote headings inside embedded preview cards from <h1> to <div> or <span> with display styling so only 'Everything you need for authentication' holds H1 status.
