nomadlist.com homepage teardown: 68/100
A legendary brand with incredible community social proof, but the busy video background hurts text contrast and the hero headline neglects the #1 reason people visit: city research.
We ran nomadlist.com through PageCritic's landing page audit. It scored 68/100, #6 of the 10 indie hacker landing page examples we scored (average 70) and #37 of all 70 homepages in our ranked list. Its strongest area is CTA (78), and its weakest is Mobile (58).
Audited on 2026-10-18 from desktop and mobile screenshots plus the page's HTML. The scores are an AI's opinion of conversion best practices, not measured conversion rates, and nomadlist.com didn't ask for this review. The page may have changed since.

Top 3 issues, with fixes
1. Hero headline completely hides the core database utility
The H1 '🌍 Find your people' positions the entire site as a social networking / meetup app, completely sidelining Nomad List's flagship value: filtering 1,000+ cities by cost, Wi-Fi speed, safety, and climate.
Fix: Rebalance the headline to bridge both value propositions: 'Find your next city. Meet your people.' Keep community as the multiplier, not the sole pitch.
2. Severe contrast and legibility issues over tropical pool background
White body text sits directly over dappled pool sunlight, deck planks, and foliage. On mobile, lines like 'Research destinations and find your best place to live and work' get clipped or clash visually with the shifting video background.
Fix: Darken the hero scrim overlay from ~30% to at least 65% opacity black gradient, or contain the left-side text inside a frosted glass (backdrop-blur) card.
3. Confusing email input placeholder and dual-action copy
The placeholder says 'Type your email or username...', but the button says 'Join Nomads.com free →' with subtext 'If you already have an account, we'll log you in'. New users don't have a username yet, creating friction and hesitation.
Fix: Change the placeholder to simply 'Enter your email' and label the primary button 'Get Free Access →'. Move 'Already a member? Log in' outside the form flow.
What the nomadlist.com homepage does well
- Outstanding immediate social proof via '#1 Nomad Community SINCE 2014' laurel wreath and real member photo stack.
- High-intent single field signup box directly above the fold requires minimal cognitive effort to start.
- Live upcoming city travel tickers ('Bangkok 53,410+ going') create immediate FOMO and active network vibrancy.
