tailscale.com homepage teardown: 69/100
Landing page examples › Dev tool › tailscale.com
A cookie-consent banner covers the entire first screen, and the hero headline is a slogan that never says what the customer gains.
We ran tailscale.com through PageCritic's landing page audit. It scored 69/100, #6 of the 9 developer tool landing page examples we scored (average 69) and #38 of all 79 homepages in our ranked list. Its strongest area is Speed & SEO (90), and its weakest is Design (40).
Audited on 2026-10-24 from desktop and mobile screenshots plus the page's HTML. The scores are an AI's opinion of conversion best practices, not measured conversion rates, and tailscale.com didn't ask for this review. The page may have changed since.

Top 3 issues, with fixes
1. Headline is a slogan, not a result
"The best secure connectivity platform for the AI era" claims superiority without saying what the visitor gets, so a first-time visitor cannot tell the outcome from the wording alone.
Fix: Rewrite the H1 to state an outcome, for example "Replace your legacy VPN with identity-based access that deploys in minutes", and move the "AI era" language into the subheadline.
2. Product category is guessable
The subheadline "A Zero Trust identity-based connectivity platform that replaces your legacy VPN, SASE, and PAM" uses several category terms (Zero Trust, SASE, PAM) that many visitors will not parse, so the product stays fuzzy.
Fix: Lead the subheadline with plain language, e.g. "Tailscale is a private network that connects your laptops, servers, and cloud resources without a VPN", and keep SASE and PAM as secondary detail.
3. Too many competing actions
Six different button labels compete in the first screen ("Start connecting devices", "Contact sales", "Get started - it's free!", plus Platform, Solutions, Customers, Community, Partnerships menu openers), which dilutes the primary choice.
Fix: Keep one primary button ("Start connecting devices") and demote "Contact sales" to a text link; remove the Platform/Solutions/Customers/Community/Partnerships menu buttons from the first-screen header, or collapse them behind one menu.
What the tailscale.com homepage does well
- The H1 is short at 9 words and set at 64 px, so it is the most prominent element on the desktop hero.
- The metrics "1,000+ hours saved with fewer connectivity issues" and "90% reduction in internal support requests" give specific, measurable benefits.
- Named customers (Instacart, Cribl, Mercury) and named developer testimonials give strong social proof for the hero audience.
